Kids Help Phone – Community Resource Database

Our Inclusion and Exclusion Policy

  1. Kids Help Phone reserves the right to determine inclusion/exclusion for individual agencies at any time.
  2. Exclusion of an agency from the Kids Help Phone Community Resource Database does not necessarily reflect on the agency’s contribution to the community. Nor, does inclusion in the Kids Help Phone Community Resource Database represent or imply endorsement of the quality of the agency’s services.
  3. Agency information is provided directly through direct contact with agencies via new resource forms, automated annual updated and informal updates initiated by Kids Help Phone or the agency. Information is also gathered indirectly from agency-sanctioned newsletters, websites and other publications.
  4. Kids Help Phone reserves the right to edit information to meet service mandate, format, guideline and space requirements.
  5. Kids Help Phone reserves the right to exclude organizations that are unresponsive to update requests and whose information cannot be made current by other means.
  6. Kids Help Phone reserves the right to refuse or discontinue listings for agencies that have had serious complaints lodged against them with any regulatory body or Kids Help Phone or an Information and Referral centre in Canada or has participated in fraudulent or illegal activity.
  7. Kids Help Phone will send a copy of their Inclusion and Exclusion Policy to those who request it as well as maintain an up to date version of this policy online at all times.

Specific Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

  1. Agencies must be accessible to the public. Accessibility implies no fees, sliding scale or nominal fees ensuring services can be obtained by persons who cannot afford private sector services.
  2. Agencies should be youth-focused however a specific maximum range will not be imposed to ensure all available resources are made known to our clientele; a minimum age of 5 will be imposed. Kids Help Phone will prioritize the inclusion of services for young people aged 5-25, but programs serving all ages will be included in our collection.
  3. Agencies offering services to specific demographic communities including LGBTQ* persons, First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis and College and University students, will prioritized for inclusion, particularly if they serve all ages.
  4. Agencies which provide human services in health, well-being, support and advocacy and are not-for-profit corporations, or do not charge fees for service, or are related to any project-specific initiative will be considered for addition to the Kids Help Phone Community Database.

  5. Government agencies (federal, provincial, county, municipal) which provide services in the areas of health, well-being, support and advocacy may also be included (although may not include all agencies, departments or services).
  6. For-profit organizations are considered on an individual basis. Inclusion is based upon uniqueness of service, lack of comparable services available through not-for-profit agencies or groups, degree of need for the service and the level of subsidized services available.
  7. Private practitioners, including medical doctors, dentists, legal/paralegal providers, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers (in private practice) are not included within our database.
  8. Agencies must provide services in English, French or both.
  9. Agencies must provide a clear description of service(s) offered including, but not limited to, contact information, agency address, eligibility, hours of service, area served, languages provided, fees, documents required, ages served, target population(s) served, application/referral/intake process, and accessibility information.
  10. Agencies should describe and provide services free of discrimination and inappropriate language. Services should be inclusive and respectful of people from a range of social communities including race, class, gender, sexual orientation and religion etc.
  11. Agencies should describe and provide services with a neutral stance whereby all sides of the issue(s) are presented.

If you have any questions or concerns about this policy and criteria, please contact the Community Resource Database team at resources@kidshelpphone.ca.

While Kids Help Phone maintains a comprehensive database of over 35,000 programs, our online database, Resources Around Me, only contains a subset of these programs. If your agency and/or service does not appear, it does not mean it is not going to published in the future and it likely is included in our larger, internal database used by counsellors every day to connect young people to services in their local community.
